Двенадцатилетний Оскар живет в небольшой деревушке неподалеку от Стокгольма. Днем он подвергается насмешкам и терпеливо сносит унизительные пинки и затрещины, зато ночью он мечтает о мести. Воспитываемый без отца Оскар, ускользнув от присмотра матери, в красках описывает в тетрадке изобретательные и безжалостные убийства его обидчиков. На бумаге он связывает людей, ломает им шеи и высасывает из них кровь. Еще он тренируется метать ножи на заднем дворе. Но однажды ночью он знакомится с девушкой по имени Эли. Она его новая соседка. Два изгоя мгновенно становятся друзьями, Эли учит Оскара храбрости, а Оскар пробуждает в ней жажду любви. Но Эли, увы, этого недостаточно - ее мучает жажда крови.
